What is Willow Bark Extract?

Willow Bark Extract comes from the bark of willow trees, most often white willow (Salix alba). The bark has been used in traditional medicine for centuries for pain and swelling. It contains a natural compound called salicin, which is chemically related to salicylic acid, the BHA used in many acne products.

In skincare, willow bark extract is usually marketed as a gentle, natural alternative to salicylic acid for oily or blemish-prone skin. It also contains plant antioxidants called polyphenols. How much it actually does on skin depends heavily on the extract, the amount used and the formula, which is why it is best seen as a soothing, supporting ingredient rather than a replacement for salicylic acid.

How Does It Work?

Salicin, the main active in willow bark, is not the same thing as salicylic acid. In the body, salicin is converted into salicylic acid. On the skin, though, it is not clear how much of that conversion happens, so a willow bark extract in a product does not automatically behave like a salicylic acid exfoliant.

What the extract does well is offer a mild, plant-based option. Willow bark also carries antioxidant plant compounds that help calm the look of irritated skin. Many brands use it in cleansers and toners for oily skin because it tends to feel gentler than a stronger BHA product.

If your goal is clearing clogged pores, salicylic acid itself is the better studied choice because it is a known, measurable strength that dissolves oil inside pores. Willow bark extract is better thought of as a soft extra in a formula, and results will vary from product to product.
