What is Sodium PCA?
Sodium PCA is the sodium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, and it is naturally present in skin as one of the main components of the Natural Moisturizing Factor, or NMF. The NMF is a collection of water-binding substances found inside skin cells that helps the outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, hold onto water and stay properly hydrated. Because Sodium PCA is essentially identical to something skin already produces on its own, it is often described as a biomimetic, or skin-identical, humectant.

How Does It Work?
Skin naturally produces Sodium PCA as part of an ongoing process: a protein called filaggrin breaks down in the outer layer of skin, releasing several byproducts, including Sodium PCA, along with amino acids and other moisture-binding substances. Together, these make up the Natural Moisturizing Factor, which is what allows the outermost layer of skin to hold onto water and stay flexible and comfortable.
When applied topically, Sodium PCA works the way it does naturally in skin: it draws in water from the surrounding air and from deeper skin layers, then binds and holds that water within the stratum corneum. This helps top up skin's own moisture-holding system, particularly useful for skin types where natural NMF production may be reduced, such as very dry or aging skin. A clinical study on a cream formulated to mimic the skin's own natural moisturizing systems, which included Sodium PCA among its NMF components, found a significant improvement in skin hydration in patients with dry skin.
