How Does It Work?
Kojic acid works by targeting tyrosinase, the enzyme skin cells use to produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color and dark spots. It does this by binding to copper, a mineral that tyrosinase needs to function. Without access to that copper, the enzyme cannot work as efficiently, so less melanin gets produced in treated areas over time.
This is a different mechanism from ingredients like alpha arbutin, which work by directly blocking the enzyme's usual target rather than its copper supply. Because of this, the two are sometimes used together for a more complete brightening effect.
