What is Glycolic Acid?
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugarcane. It has the smallest molecule of the common AHAs, which allows it to penetrate skin quickly and deliver a stronger exfoliating effect than gentler acids like mandelic acid. It is one of the most extensively studied ingredients in skincare, used to smooth texture, brighten dull skin, and support collagen production. Glycolic acid is included in INTOIT's Maximalist Moisturizer, where it works alongside mandelic acid to support smoother, more even-looking skin.

How Does It Work?
Glycolic acid works by dissolving the bonds that hold dead skin cells together on the surface of skin, a process called chemical exfoliation. Because it has the smallest molecule of the common AHAs, it penetrates skin more quickly and deeply than gentler acids, which is why it tends to deliver more noticeable results but also carries a slightly higher chance of irritation if introduced too quickly.
Beyond exfoliation, regular use of glycolic acid has been shown to stimulate collagen production and support epidermal renewal, which is part of why it is associated with smoother texture and firmer-looking skin over time. It also helps fade the look of dullness and uneven tone by clearing away the buildup of dead cells that can make skin look flat, and by mildly interfering with the process that produces excess pigment.
With glycolic acid, smoother-feeling skin is often noticeable quickly, improvements in tone and texture typically build over several weeks, and firmness-related benefits from collagen support take longer, generally a few months of consistent use.
Transparency note: Because glycolic acid increases skin's sensitivity to the sun, daily sunscreen is essential when using it, and starting with a lower frequency of use is the safest way to introduce it into a routine.
