What is Alpha Arbutin?
Alpha arbutin is a brightening ingredient derived from plants such as bearberry. It is chemically related to hydroquinone, a stronger skin-lightening ingredient, but alpha arbutin is a much gentler, more stable version that is widely used in over-the-counter skincare. It works to fade the look of dark spots and even out skin tone without the harsher side effects sometimes associated with more aggressive lightening ingredients. Alpha arbutin is included in INTOIT's Maximalist Moisturizer, where it works alongside kojic acid and glutathione to support a brighter, more even complexion.

How Does It Work?
Dark spots and uneven tone happen when certain areas of skin produce more melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, than others. Alpha arbutin works by temporarily blocking tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for producing melanin. It does this by competing directly with the enzyme's usual target, effectively getting in the way so less melanin is made in the treated area.
Research shows alpha arbutin does this without switching off the gene that makes tyrosinase altogether, which is part of why its effects are considered gentle and reversible rather than permanently altering how skin makes pigment. Because it works on new melanin production rather than removing existing pigment, results build up gradually with consistent use, not overnight.
